Zin Maung Maung

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Hi Burma visitors. I believe that education indeed impacts the quality of an individual’s life. I want to be instrumental in reforming the areas of Myanmar education that are often neglected. Despite recent efforts through the National Education Strategic Plan 2016-2021, rote learning, through chanting and repetition, still dominates. For all subjects, many Myanmar students learn textbooks by heart, without actually understanding the material, from kindergarten to university. I am aiming to provide alternative learning and teaching strategies, influenced by the cognitive science which is informing the latest developments in modern education. Becoming an independent, life-long learner is so important in this age of rapid technological and societal change. This can be achieved by engaging in our interactive lessons and participating in a large range of activities that focus on academic and community activities. I am responsible for recruiting staff for all Hi Burma education programs, including local and international volunteers. I facilitate their professional and personal development to ensure successful outcomes for Hi Burma. I lead and grow our young staff team to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to explore and understand our modern world. The Hi Burma team objective is to create young educated citizens – the most certain way out of poverty and towards peace in Myanmar.

Karen Taylor Burge

May I add my welcome to our Hi Burma website. It has been a whirlwind adventure moving from in-person teacher training and English language lessons in Mandalay and beyond to online teaching. Establishing Homeschooling programmes with our team of wonderful volunteer teachers across Myanmar has been an additional major undertaking. Hope Institute Burma constitutes the effort of our staff team to remain dedicated to the design and delivery of free education to the disadvantaged. Sadly, ‘disadvantaged’ now describes many more people living in Myanmar, not only refugees. This is because the prevailing violence is now widespread and has disrupted or even deprived young people and children of education in any form. We cannot tolerate this situation, because the future of this generation has been stolen. This explains the reasons for founding Hi Burma – to combat the lack of a quality education for those who are fighting for democracy. My role in the organisation is to ensure that the learner- centred approach and effective teaching methods that we have been promoting since 2016 continue to be practised and developed through Hi Burma. Evidence from international research shows that the best way to raise education standards is to have well-qualified, experienced teachers, which is why Hi Burma focuses on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as well as Initial Teacher Training (ITT), alongside English language learning and teaching. If you agree that education is the prime means to alleviate poverty, I invite you to support us in this valuable work.
